This is a hand-carved Victorian wall pocket, also known as a magazine or newspaper rack, likely made from walnut wood. Wall pockets like this were popular in the late 19th century, often dating to the 1880s, used for holding mail, magazines, or newspapers. The carving features a central medallion and ornate scroll and leaf details. The sides of the pocket have a pleated leather material. It’s quite large at 23” at the tallest and 15.5” at the widest. The scrollwork is broken in several places, as shown in the photos. It’s still so very special. I love the imperfections, but you could always try to cover with a plant or other florals flowing out of it. Priced accordingly - fully intact versions are at least double.
